Porto Alegre is the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. In the main square, Praça Marechal Deodoro, is the Renaissance Metropolitan Cathedral, with religious murals outside. The Piratini Palace has a neoclassical style and is the seat of the state government. Nearby is the San Pedro Theater, which dates back to the 19th century. The city is known for being an access road to the high canyons of the Sierra de Recortados National Park.
